From "college dropout" to business breakthrough
Monday, April 8th, 2024
My business "failures" made me want to give sometimes.
Years of struggling in my dad's company, trying everything I could think of to make more sales and streamline our system wasn't working and it was all my fault.
But if you know anything about me, you know that I'm stubborn as a mule, independent and am always looking to improve.
I decided that this was not how I was going to go down: unsuccessful and feeling sorry for myself.
Brendon Burchard says: “You’re not scared to start your dream. You’re embarrassed to be seen starting small."
I decided I didn't care what other people thought or how embarrassed I was by my entire situation.
This was my dream and I was going to make this work or die trying.
If other people could make this work than so could I!
My current self, my future, my future family, my immediate family, all needed me to see this through and make this work.
I decided to take even more ownership and do whatever it took to break through.
I'd stay up longer, work later, study more, implement faster.
I hired my cousin Kathleen which was one of the best business decisions I've ever made. She became my right-hand-man and we're still business partners to this day. We dove dove in and tore the business apart.
Nothing was off limits, everything was on the table and we got to work.
We worked twelve hour shifts every day for years.
We studied Brendon Burchard, Frank Kern, Rick Sapio and more.
We were committed to this and had to make it work.
One thing that made a HUGE difference was Russell Brunson's sales funnel methodology.
His books were just coming out at the time and we devoured them, taking each strategy as scripture and implementing it as fast we possibly could into our startup.
My dad would create content, shot videos and write sales copy. We'd take all those assets and build out sales funnels and then launch it to our list.
Over and over and over again we did this till we started getting pretty good and wicked fast.
Eventually, FINALLY we broke through.
We went from making a few thousand dollars a month to making 20k, 30k, 40k per month and beyond.
That might not seem like a lot to you, but for a "college kids" (not going to college kids) that was big deal for us.
We'd never seen so much money in our lives let alone be responsible for generating all that cash.
I still remember the day we broke $1,000,000 in our sales funnel software.
I couldn't believe how much we had learned, how many people we had helped and how much I had changed over the past few years.
Years later, I realized all those years in the trenches, I was up against something the "ice cube effect".
Ice will not melt until it reaches 32°F, not 25°F not 31.5°F, 32°F.
You're working your guts out, trying to bring the temperature up to where you can see ANY results, but nothing is happening.
The reality is, something IS happening. It's not visible, not obvious, but something IS happening.
This is where 80% of entrepreneurs give up. This is where I almost gave up. This is the bottom of the swamp.
Eventually, suddenly, all at once, you break through. You raise the temperature just one more degree and the ice melts, it changes completely, it's an entirely different entity now.
Harry Vardon said: "There are only two types of players-those who keep their nerves under control and win championships, and those who do not."
He was talking about golf, but entrepreneurship is exactly like that. It's an "all or nothing" sort of thing.
What we consider "visible results" (money, influence, sales etc...) only come after a mountain of invisible transformation, personal growth, mastering new skills and building the right assets.
We had to get all our ducks in a row before breaking through.
But now that we had, we knew we could do it again and help others do the same.
Talk more soon,
Josh
