Corporate America stole our freedom
Friday, April 12th, 2024
Our little family of four was crammed into our tiny Honda Civic "grandma" car driving up Provo Canyon.
Mom and Dad in the front, two kids in the back.
It was finally starting to get warm and we were heading up to Bridal Veil falls to go on a short hike.
Becca get's a call... and one minutes later our lives were turned upside down.
I was struggling to get clients and wasn't bringing home the bacon.
My wife Becca, was supporting me and our little family while I was getting started. She's the only reason I'm here today.
"Dan says all employees have to go into the office four days a week starting August 1st. No more remote work." Becca told me as she hung up with her boss.
At first that didn't mean a lot.
But then the repercussions started to sink in.
Mom wouldn't be home with the kids.
No more family lunches or picnics.
No more work breaks to go on a walk (or a short family hike).
No more brainstorm with Josh or rant about work sessions.
Becca's job was just over an hour away both ways, so she'd be gone at least 10 hours probably more like 11-12 with traffic.
Not cool.
That might sound totally reasonable and normal to you.
In my world, that's unacceptable.
Not necessarily the work part.
Becca had a great job, with good people, good pay and benefits and she liked working there.
That's not the part that bothered me.
It's the lack of freedom and dependance on some corporate-america big-wig making life decisions for us.
THAT'S what really bothered me.
In one fell swoop, he turned our lives inside out without a second thought.
With the snap of his fingers, he could control our daily lives, schedules, priorities, how we parent our kids, how we work together as a couple and more.
One new company "policy" could totally change when we go on vacation, how much time we spent together, how we worked on our passions and hobbies, who we interacted with and lots more.
Having the ability to chart your own course and determine your destiny is an essential part of personal freedom.
Controlling one's schedule, priorities, relationships are all extremely important to me and my family.
We spent the rest of the hike and afternoon trying to figure out what to do.
Becca wanted to be home, teach and raise our kids, be a parent, support me, have meals as a family.
If she was gone all day, none of that would be possible.
Call us old fashion, but we had worked our entire marriage to make our current life a reality and weren't about to let some snobby policy-police, quota-filling manager tell us how to run our lives.
Our lives are our own and we wanted freedom.
To do everything we wanted to do, we NEEDED freedom.
This wasn't freedom.
And this is one of the biggest reasons I started my own company.
Having worked in corporate-america myself, I knew the drill. My jobs working for other people never lasted long but I get how the apparent "stability" can be appealing.
"The money will keep coming as long as you play by the rules, don't be a problem child and do what we say."
If you're anything like me, that life is NOT for you.
That probably bothers you and makes you want to do ANYTHING ELSE.
Ya, me too.
Personal freedom is "...the main motivation of humankind to be free, to express our true selves and pursue our dreams without restriction—to experience what may be called Personal Freedom." - Brendon Burchard.
And from the Declaration of Independence: "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."
It is our duty to pursue and achieve personal freedom in our lives.
Without it, we are subject to someone or something else.
Personal freedom isn't lawlessness. We all have to obey laws and have high-standards.
But when we have the choice to choose liberty over captivity, responsibility over mediocrity, contribution over complacency; then that must always be our choice.
This is the way of the entrepreneur.
This is the way of the Pathfinder.
We will find a way to make our dreams come true.
We will overcome any obstacle in at least the pursuit of greatness, even if we don't always succeed.
We will choose the path less traveled and make all the difference we can.
Choose personal freedom.
Talk next week,
Josh
PS How can you choose freedom more often? How can you design a life you love? How can you support others doing the same thing?
